What is a Re-pipe? |
Really, it's all there in the name. You might have most likely heard the term re-pipe. For many of our customers, it is a mysterious, dreadful word that translates as something equivalent to a root canal. Maybe you or someone you know has had one done before. Maybe your tap water has a rusty brown color or slightly sulfur smell to it and you have heard a re-pipe can help. Or you may have noticed a slow kitchen, shower or tub drain due to grease and sludge built up. Never ignore gurgling toilet or sewage flooding ur bath room by over flowing the toilet, which means you may have broken drain or sewer some where at your home.
There are many chronic plumbing conditions that a re-pipe can be a permanent remedy to. Whatever your situation is, in this section we would like to dispel any anxiety or confusion about what a re-pipe is, what is involved in having one done and what value it might be to you. |
|
Why Repiping or Rerouting? |
Whether you're re-piping your entire home while renovating, or simply trying to fix a leak or stop current difficulties with your plumbing, Mr. Drain ® Plumbing of Red Bluff uses the most advanced installation technologies, and the highest quality pipes to get the job done in the quickest, best and least intrusive ways possible. Copper Re-piping has traditionally been a very inconvenient and costly project, since large trenches had to be dug alongside existing pipes in order to replace them effectively. This could be damaging enough when it's digging up the yard in your home, but what if pipes go underneath your driveway, or worse yet, under your parking lot in a commercial structure? Demolition and repaving projects can be extremely costly and take months to finish.
But Mr. Drain ® Plumbing of Red Bluff can identify problem areas with water leak inspections, water leak and line locators, and perform either trenchless pipe replacement by digging a few access holes and drilling new lines right through your existing pipes underground. It's sometimes also possible to simply re-line or reroute the existing pipes without destroying the old pipe at all with trenchless inliners. |

Why do you need copper or pex repiping?
Why does your home have low water pressure? As galvanized pipes grow old, rust and decay build up within the pipe, constricting the flow of water. As less water is able to flow from your pipes, it becomes difficult to run multiple fixture at a time and ultimately impossible to run even a single faucet, much less a shower or dishwasher. At the same time that your water flow is decreased, the rust buildup inside the pipes mingles together with the water that you re utilizing to shower with, wash dishes with or drink. Not healthy or tasty, that's without a doubt. If you overlook your low water pressure trouble, the rust will eventually eat through your galvanized pipes and you will be facing total water pressure failure and enormous water damage and mold from leaky pipes. Copper repiping is the answer these issues. Call us today and let one of our plumbing managers give you a free in home estimate, and show you how we can re-pipe your home or building the right way, and for less money - guaranteed!
Copper and PEX repiping is all we do. Homeowners often encounter slab leaks, discoloration of water, pinhole leaks in pipes, lowered water pressure or many other symptoms brought on by corroded galvanized pipes. If your home was built more than 20 years ago, it is most common to have been constructed using materials that are now known to corrode over time. This corrosion leads to rust and debris buildup in your pipes, deterioration and eventually an uncontrollable leak. Many times those problems can only be remedied with a plumbing repipe.

The Problem |
|
Did you know that many older homes were plumbed using galvanized pipe? This was in the days when the long-term problems associated with galvanized pipe were yet unrealized. These problems consist mainly of rust buildup. If you have ever seen the inside of a rusted galvanized pipe, you know that it is not a pretty sight. The entire built-up slimy gunk constricts the flow of water, robbing you of the volume of water you expect from your plumbing system. Your fixtures and appliances will not perform properly if they do not receive an adequate flow of water.
Over time, rust buildup and pipe deterioration can result in you having to contend with dirty water that smells bad and is not drinkable. You might notice low water pressure in the shower, kitchen, laundry and perhaps scalding or freezing caused by buildup in the hot or cold water supply. You also may notice that your lawn sprinklers no longer cover the area they used to, and that running water in your sinks seem to have low pressure. Another symptom is when you experience a drastic change in your shower water temperature whenever a toilet is flushed. In the worst cases, your entire water supply may be choked off, leaving you high and dry. |

The Solution |
Many older houses experience chronic plumbing problems because of deteriorating pipes that are rusted, corroded, have deteriorating joints or built up minerals restricting flow. Often with older homes the only solution is to replace the existing pipes. Being a homeowner you should understand a whole house repipe is a major undertaking is usually a completely unexpected and substantial expense. Take advantage of our research into the different solutions and types of pipes that can be installed. We would love to help you save some money.
As galvanized pipe corrodes, your house may develop hidden leaks in walls, attic or basement, even under the house. You can experience major costly damage before these leaks become apparent. That is why hard copper repiping makes sense for older houses that have galvanized or soft copper piping. Mr. Drain ® Plumbing of Red Bluff uses the highest quality hard copper pipes of the correct diameter and thickness for each component of a copper repiping job. This usually means Type L copper piping, which can vary in diameter from 3/8 inch to 3 inches, depending on the particular application. Our experts will size each portion of your repiping layout to ensure proper water flow to all parts of the house. |
|

|
The Process |
During a copper or pex re-pipe, all pipes from the meter to the main shut off valve and all hot and water pipes in the house like under the kitchen and lavatory sink, the tub and shower valve and the hot water heater are replaced.
Essentially, all of the pressure piping in your home is removed and "re-piped" in with newer, cleaner, more durable piping. To accomplish this, the old hot and cold water lines are all removed from the walls, ceiling, floors and basement. The new lines are installed through the attic or around the home and drops them back into the walls where the original pipes were. The result is that outwardly, your plumbing fixtures have not changed at all, but the pipes that service them are fresh and new.
There are many reasons to re-pipe. The older copper, steel and poly butylene pipes can become brittle and problematic with time. Copper and galvanized steel piping corrodes over time as well and the passage that water is able to flow through become smaller and smaller until it is without value to the homeowner. You should close to re-pipe because it is less expensive to replace all of the piping than to continually patch holes and repair leaks. Another problem is dirty water. When metal pipes get old, they become corroded and the residue from this corrosion compromises the incoming water supply. Supposedly fresh water leaves the faucet orange, rusty or bitter tasting, cloudy or just plain dirty. Another situation that can arise is a break in the old piping under the house slab. To repair this leak, the floor in the home and the concrete slab underneath it will have to be saw cut and removed. The ground will need to be dug up to reveal the pipe and repair the leak. Often, the process of searching for the leak complicates this type of repair and the area of the floor that must be removed can be quite large. A much simpler and less expensive solution is a re-pipe.
Three of the biggest questions most of our customers ask are "How do you price a re-pipe?", "How long does it take?" and "How long will the new piping last?"
Many factors go into estimating a re-pipe price. Among them are the number of fixtures that the technician has to run new plumbing to and the accessibility of your attic. Some people decide to upgrade their fixtures or add additional shut-off valves or outside hose bibs at the time of the re-pipe. Many of our customers replace their water heater with a new one when they re-pipe. All of these things contribute to the price of the project. These same factors affect how long the re-pipe will take. The technician must run all the new hot and cold lines through the attic. If the attic space is tall and open, the technician can work quickly. If the attic is small with a low roof or if the technician has to create access to the fixtures through closets or cabinets the work takes longer. Generally, a re-pipe takes 2-3 days to complete on a moderate size home with reasonable accessibility. As for how long the new piping will last, we provide warranty on all of our labor and back our manufacture's warranty on parts. Beyond that, consider the many ways that piping can corrode, breakdown and fail.

Frequently Asked Questions About Copper Repiping
What are some signs that I need to replace my water supply lines?
If you have noticed low water pressure in your sink, shower, or bathtub, it may be time to replace your existing water lines. The lower pressure is probably due to mineral buildup inside of the water supply piping, which effectively reduces the volume of water flow by reducing the inner diameter of the pipe itself.
Why does mineral buildup occur inside my water pipes?
Many older homes and buildings have water supply systems that use galvanized steel pipes. The galvanic coating inside the pipe tends to flake and peel off after several years, and that's all it takes for calcium and lime to attach themselves to the side of the pipe. After years of mineral buildup it's not at all uncommon for a 3/4" pipe to have an effective inner diameter of 1/4" or less, reducing water flow by approximately 75%.
What are the advantages of copper repiping?
There are many benefits of copper repipes. Copper is a very durable material and can provide reliable service for 50 years or more. This, incidentally, is one reason why copper repiping helps raise the resale value of many properties. It is also a very easy material to work with, making installation simple. Because of its flexibility, copper tends to hold up very well during natural disasters (like earthquakes). Being very resistant to corrosion, it avoids the mineral buildup that is so prevalent in galvanized steel piping. Copper is also biostatic, meaning that it prevents the growth of bacteria so you'll be ensured of a safe, potable water supply for a long time. Overall, copper offers many economic and health benefits, making it a very cost-effective investment for any home- or building owner.
